In streamlining and modernising its front office processes, water engineering specialist Biwater has selected a comprehensive, integrated software solution from Causeway.

Procured on a subscription model and deployed as a cloud-based solution, the new system will enable Biwater to work more efficiently and maximise project profitability through enhanced control and transparency of project performance.

The Causeway solution comprises of Estimating, BIM measurement, Electronic Take-off, Cost Management, Value Management, Business Process Management, Document and Content Management, Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Financial Accounting, whilst also providing seamless integration with Primavera P6 project planning.

Biwater designs, builds, operates and maintains water and wastewater treatment plants around the world. The company specialises in sourcing and arranging funding for clients to support their investments in vital water infrastructure and ensure long-term project sustainability. Clients’ increased income and savings in non-revenue water (leaks), support repayment of loans for new projects. This can result in a long gap between creating an opportunity and revenue flowing into the business.

“As a construction engineering company we are in a cyclical business, and as a result, timing is one of our biggest challenges,” explained Biwater Chief Financial Officer, Paul Stevens. “So when we won a $1bn contract in mid-2015 this was a catalyst to embark on a programme to modernise our processes, systems and infrastructure.

“As a specialist engineering company any migration to a new environment needed to be focused on the front end of the business. This approach was clearly a good fit with Causeway’s focus on delivering integrated software tools encompassing estimating, project accounting and document and workflow management – as well as being able to manage financial accounting and cash flow.

The Integrated Approach

“To that end, we were happy to go with a full Enterprise solution because we wanted to get to that next level of sophistication, integration, business intelligence and real-time reporting and analysis. We did consider other systems but based on ability, mind-set and approach – as well as the fact that Causeway has people who understand construction – this was clearly the best match,” he continued.

Causeway’s integrated solution enable Biwater to carry out fast take-off from drawings produced by the company’s Design Department, exporting quantities directly into Estimating. Information from the estimate will then be transferred seamlessly to the project and commercial teams, providing enhanced and real-time visibility of how the project is performing in comparison to the way it was priced.

The chosen solution also includes Causeway ECM, a comprehensive document and content management module, to enable the company to improve document and drawing management, whilst also standardising and automating business processes and workflow.

This was a particularly important consideration, as all of the company’s current work is international, with large projects being managed from the UK Head Office in Dorking, Surrey.

“We expect to grow significantly in the next five years as we attract more large-scale projects. These projects will need to be managed and run very differently to what we’ve done in the past,” Paul Stevens noted. “We need much more transparency and automation in terms of tracking, reporting, analysis and integration, right through to project planning on the ground, all within a workflow-based environment. This is where Causeway will take us to the next level of sophistication,” he added.

Seamless integration between cost management, value management and document control brings all project information together within a single repository. In addition, graphical workflow tools make it very easy to standardise best practice procedures across all projects and regions, automating processes so that everyone is working in a consistent way.

In parallel, integration with Primavera P6 will bring project planning tasks, resources and time together with budget, cost and value information to enable earned value analysis and accurate cash flow forecasting.

Subscription and Cloud Service

The entire Causeway solution is being provided as a cloud-based managed service and priced on an annual subscription basis.

“Cash flow in our business speaks volumes and it makes perfect sense to pay for the software on an OPEX model rather than a large capital outlay. It fits with what we are used to in the business and helps to align outgoings to income generation,” Paul Stevens explained.

“In addition, we didn’t want to put extra pressure on our IT Department, so it made sense to outsource the management and risk to Causeway,” he concluded.
